Vacations in the Scottish town of Inverness And A Number Of Top Class Places You Must See

Inverness, a city in the Highlands of Scotland  is found in some of the finest countryside in the United Kingdom. In and around Inverness are a number of important historic sites, frequently these sites witnessed a large amount of violence and suffering. Of course the city of Inverness has a incredible collection of tourist attractions (and the number is continually on the increase). In the following paragraphs I introduce you to 3 places to visit in Inverness Inverness Castle, Beauly Priory and Inverness Museum & Art Gallery:

Beauly Priory

Monks, from the Valliscaulian order, set up a community at Beauly Priory in the Thirteenth century. Sadly nobody can say the factual date of foundation but it is widely agreed that is would have been sometime around 1230. At that time the patron, and landowner, of Beauly, was Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat. Bisset and the French monks are those who first named the settlement Beauly, derived from ‘beau lieu’ which means beautiful place in French. Sadly, the priory at Beauly was abandoned after the Reformation and stone from the walls were thieved for use the construction of other local structures. Historic Scotland now care for the priory ruins as it was passed into state hands in 1913.

Inverness Castle

Over the centuries there have been various structures on the site where you can now see Inverness Castle, evidence shows that the site had a structure there as far back as 1057. The first Inverness Castle was attacked by King Robert I of Scotland, and nearly destroyed. The castle which sits on the site today was constructed and designed , in 1836, by William Burn. The picturesque red sandstone structure, is perched on top of a cliff gazing down across the the cathedral on the opposite side and the River Ness. King James I(of Scotland) conducted parliament at Inverness Castle in the year 1427, and summoned all the Northern Chieftains to be in attendance. Horrifically 3 of these chieftains were later killed for supporting an independent monarchy.

Inverness Museum (and Art Gallery)

Located in Inverness town center is the newly renovated Inverness Museum and Art Gallery which is really worth visiting especially if the weather is poor. At the museum you can explore Scottish History and find out how the Highlands are connected with the rest of the world. You can also find out about the folk of the Highlands, their traditions and culture. There are several different exhibitions featuring, costumes, textiles, crafts, fine arts, archaeology and wildlife.
