Taking Appropriate Care of Your Rabbit

Rabbits may be small in stature, but they have a lot of special needs and requirements that differ from the normal type of pets that we are accustomed to. So anyone who is thinking of getting a rabbit as a pet should learn proper rabbit care before making a decision. To get you started, here are some things you should learn:

Rabbit Hutch

Ideally, your rabbit’s cage should be at least 4 times larger than your rabbit, but bigger is always better especially if it will spend most of its time inside the cage. The floor of the cage should always be solid. Many rabbit cages are still made with wire floors with pull out pans underneath because it can be cleaned easily, but cages of this type are uncomfortable and my cause sores. If the cage you have has a wire floor, cover it with sisal mats, grass or a piece of wood.

Diet

You need to make sure that you have a pretty much unlimited supply of grass hay for feed such as brome or timothy. Grass hay helps to ensure that your rabbit stays healthy by keeping its intestinal tract clean. You also need a supply of quality rabbit pellets. Make sure that your younger rabbits, under the age of six months old, dead poets a minimum protein content of 15 to 19% and a minimum of 18% fiber. You are also going to need to feed your rabbit things such as collard greens, carrots tops, different types of lettuce, turnip greens, and any other type of dark leafy green vegetable that might come to mind. As a rule of thumb, you should give your rabbit 2 cups of greens for every 6 pounds that the rabbit weighs. Fresh, clean water should be available at all times.

Litter Training

Rabbits have a tendency to use a single part of its cage for littering. When your rabbit decides which area of its cage it wants to use, you need to fill that area with pelleted newspaper litter, or some type of hay. The box should be kept clean and changed daily so that the odors can be kept to a minimum.

Keeping the Cage Cleaned

Take the time to clean your rabbits cage a minimum of one time a week. Place your pet inside an alternate cage or somewhere safe around your house. You need to sweep the floor clean and remove any of the solid waste material. Whenever you clean and scrub the cage floor, make sure that you use soap and warm water.

Handling Your Rabbit

Improper handling of your rabbit can cause injury. Do not pick up the rabbit from it’s ears. When you pick up a rabbit, make sure that you use one hand to support its front legs and the other its back legs.
