Learn to sing at home

It seems everybody loves to sing. Even folks who sing badly experience the urge to break into song every once in a while. Singing at home is a great way to relax and can also be a great place to practice to become a professional singer. Of course you will need professional guidance to mold and develop your skills if you want to become the kind of singer you’ve always dreamed about. If you enjoy singing and have always dreamed of becoming a fantastic singer but were always short of time or money, then this singing at home article is for you.

The benefits of learning singing at home
Aspiring singers usually choose to go to private singing lessons or to a vocal training school to learn to sing. Admittedly private lessons and singing school are great ways to learn to sing, but unfortunately for most people it’s a luxury they can’t afford. Fortunately home singing lessons offer an effective yet inexpensive alternative and even enjoy many advantages over traditional singing lessons. In most cases singing at home will also be the most convenient option. Below I’ve listed some of the numerous benefits:

  • You can schedule your singing training when it suits you best.
  • Singing at home means you can learn at your own pace.
  • You can avoid feelings of pressure or embarrassment when you sing at home.
  • You can play home singing lessons over as often as you need to.
  • You get to learn from the best singing coaches at a fraction of the cost.

With so many great reasons to start learning to sing at home, hopefully you’re already convinced. Still have your doubts? Well allow me to respond to some of the common concerns people tend to have about learning to sing at home: (Check out this page on ways to practice singing for more info)

Where do I practice at home?
Anywhere where you can be alone and concentrate is a good place to practice singing. Ideally you should have a area that you can leave set up for your singing practice so it’s easier to get started.

When should I practice singing?
My recommendation is to schedule your singing for a specific time each day. It up to you whether you prefer to sing in the mornings or later in the day. The important thing is that you choose a time when you can focus on your practice and you’ll be free from distractions.

Just how long should one sing for?
Just how long you practice your singing will depend on your experience and skill. If you’re a beginner then 20 minutes a day is a great start. As your singing improves and your voice gets stronger, you can start increasing this to about 30 - 60 minutes. It’s important to remember that a short focused practice session is better than a long unfocused one. Also shorter regular practice is much better than occasional marathon training sessions. And rest your voice if it gets tired.

Home singing tips
The best advice I can give you is to stop making excuses and just get started. Practice in the shower or the basement if space is tight. If you’re pressed for time then do your vocal warm ups during your commute in the car. Don’t be held back by inconveniences. Stick at it and before you know it you’ll be hitting and holding notes that you thought impossible.
