What Can I Do To Help Save My Marriage?
I think this article will also be of interest to you: How can I help save my marriage.
If you’ve been wondering ‘What can help save my marriage?’ then, you’ve actually already found part of the solution! Walking away from a crisis is the easiest thing to do particularly if you got married recently and don’t get along with your partner. However, it may not be the thing you really want to do because your heart doesn’t agree or something tells you that things can be repaired. Once you have decided to stay on, part of the problem has actually already been resolved because you’re ready to take on the challenge and are heading in a positive direction.
Most marriages break up because of false assumptions about your partner’s needs and expression of your own needs. Communication is the biggest key to saving a marriage. Modern lifestyle makes communication far easier than ever before even if both partners have a hectic work timetable. You can stay in touch through the day with instant messaging services, emails and cell phones. Even if partners work in different cities and meet only on weekends, there is always video chat via the Internet. The better the communication is between spouses, the greater are the chances of the marriage lasting.
Effort - We grow up in a media-hypnotized world with instant gratification being the mantra for most of our needs. But a marriage doesn’t work like that in practical terms. Forget about romantic movies and stuff. Marriage is hard work. Founding it on mutual romantic love makes working out a marriage easier but it is hard work nevertheless. You cannot take things for granted and understand that not all needs can be fulfilled by your partner at all times. Time and patience along with effort in building a companionship are important.
When things cannot be solved by conversation and discussion seeking a counselor is not a bad idea either. A counselor can help both of you see things with a mature perspective and further help you and your partner improve your communication and sort out differences. Going to a counselor helps you see your problems with a third perspective without any criticism involved.
Other help: Be very careful if you feel your partner has a drug or psychiatric problem. In that case you will need to seek proper medical guidance. Considerable patience, love and care along with family support will be required to handle these problems. Forcing your partner to go to a de-addiction center or psychiatrist won’t help. You will have to work on it slowly and steadily if you want to save your marriage.
Most often we are too busy analyzing other people’s faults and overlook ours. If you’re having trouble in your marriage, try and sort out your own negatives too. Be easy on yourself and your partner. Understand that no one is perfect and you can save your marriage by adjusting a bit yourself and helping your partner adjust a bit too. After all, it’s a question of two adults with very set patterns of behavior trying to live together.
One very important thing in a marriage is to run it yourself. Remember, it’s just the two of you in it. Do not get swayed by nosey relatives into judging your partner or comparing your married life with that of others. Everyone has different circumstances and personalities. Comparisons will get you nowhere and others may have the best of intentions but will not be able to understand how the two of you fit together. Advice is welcome but control is not. You must be clear about this when it comes to your friends and relatives.
Getting the purpose of a marriage wrong will surely doom it. A marriage is not for fulfilling all your needs but the coming together of two people to nurture each other to conquer individual goals. Building a homestead that gives a regular supply of faith, encouragement, joy and strength is the purpose of marriage. This requires effort and commitment. Enjoy both the spaces and togetherness in your marriage and view it as a bond for nurturing both of you. Do not live in false impressions of romantic tales or make it a parasitic relationship expecting your partner to meet all your needs. Not only can you then save your marriage but also possibly write a ‘forever love story’.
