What Do Your Clothes Say About You?

Some people don’t put much thought into getting dressed in the morning. They just throw on whatever is clean, whatever is comfortable, whatever is nearby and easy to throw on. For some people, the logic is that their outward appearance should not matter. But in reality, for better or for worse, your clothes make a statement to the people you encounter during the day. Whether or not it should be this way, people make assumptions about each other based on the way they are dressed.

Sometimes, an outfit indicates that a person belongs to a certain subculture. Think about it. If you see someone walking down the street in a leather jacket, a black helmet, and motorcycle boots, you are going to make certain assumptions about that person’s lifestyle. You are going to assume that they ride a bike and that they identify with motorcycle culture. And if you see someone with a mohawk, a denim jacket covered in patches, and combat boots, you will assume that they identify with punk rock culture. That is the image that their outfit conveys to the rest of society.

Some outfits cause people to assume that we listen to a certain type of music. A woman with big hair in jeans tucked into tall brown boots, wearing a cowboy hat and a jacket with fringe across the front probably likes country music. And you might assume that a guy with baggy pants, an oversized t-shirt and colorful sneakers is a hiphop fan.

Some people choose to convey a message through the things that they refuse to wear. People who are vegan do not eat or wear any products that are made from animals. A vegan would refuse to wear a leather watch or any kind of fur. Some vegans would not wear wool. Instead, they would choose fabrics made only from plants or synthetic materials.

We cannot get away from the fact that our clothes send certain signals. If you wear only neutral colors and clothes that are baggy and hide your shape, it sends the message that you want to hide in some way. People may assume that you are uncomfortable with your body, or that you simply want to avoid drawing any kind of attention to yourself. When you are getting dressed, take a look in the mirror, and ask yourself the following questions.

What kind of signals is this outfit sending?

Is this the message that I really want to convey?

If you determine that the answer is no, you might want to find an alternative. Clearly your clothes should not send messages that aren’t true. You shouldn’t dress in a way that you are uncomfortable with in order to conform to the latest style. But your clothes should, in some way, reflect the unique aspects of your personality. If the way you dress is drab and boring, chances are they are not doing that. Think of your outfits as an art form. Have fun with them, and do your best to show who you are!
